THIS IS:  Aids Awareness Month, National Tie Month and Universal Human Rights Month

QUOTE OF THE DAY:  "The greater love is a mother's; then comes a dog's; then a sweetheart's."  Polish Proverb

Several months ago, mom promised she'd be able to take me for a walk by the end of the year.  It ain't happening.  Although her walking has improved, it hasn't been enough to handle me.  She's still learning to walk again.

However, she did promise to take me on a bike ride with her.  She kept her promise.

It's so fun trotting along side mom while she pedals.  Her bike is a nifty vehicle.  It's a cherry red recumbent three wheeler bike with a basket in the rear.  I don't fit in the basket like Beverly's little poodles do in hers.

Mom tells me not to be distracted by cats, birds, worms, squirrels, other dogs and people.  Oh, and ants.  But I can't help looking back to make sure mom's friend Marsha is keeping up with us.

And the time we were riding past Beauty's home.  Her mom Sue was out talking to a friend and they saw us go by.  Beauty's mom called out my name.  I'm not one to ignore a friend so I stopped, turned around and pulled mom in the bike backwards several feet.  That was kind of funny.

Or the time I saw the dog run and started to run at close to full speed.  Mom couldn't grab the brake handle quick enough and we almost ran into the fence.  (I really had to pee.)

But mom loves me in spite of my faults and she laughs about the mishaps later.  Mom is so forgiving.

I love going for bike rides with mom.  I don't mean to do anything to spoil it, but I know mom will forgive me and WE WILL RIDE AGAIN!

MY SISTER MINNIE

QUOTE OF THE DAY:  "In order to keep a true perspective of one's importance, everyone should have a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him."
                                                                                                         Dereke Bruce

TODAY IS:  Video games day, and THIS IS: World Animal Remembrance, Self Improvement and Healthy Aging Month

My sister, Minnie, is a great little hunter.    She captures lizards by the dozens.   Mom and dad try to save them.  Minnie makes one  mistake in that she announces she has caught one as she brings is into the house.   Mom knows that cry, and yells, "Don.  Minnie has a lizard."    Minnie then drops it and, and the lizard runs for its life.

If dad is lucky enough to catch the lizard, he lets it loose outside.  If not, Minnie runs them ragged.
The tail is the first thing to go.  The lizard runs and Minnie gives chase.   Mom and dad find the lizard tails in the bathtub  and on the floor in several rooms.  They find the dead lizards a few days later.   Sometimes they are found under the bathroom scale, but most are found in the dining room under the table.

The other day,mom told Minnie, "If you don't stop bringing in lizards, you are going to lose your outdoor privileges. "

Did Minnie listen?  Of course not.  She's too cute and not deterred.  But she's not outside in the grass or anything. She's on the screened-in back porch where lizards sneak in.  In the morning,  Minnie  sits by the back door and whines until mom lets her out. Minnie is proud of her catches and prances around a bit until she lets one go  and gives chase.

My brother, Mickey, on the other hand, would rather stay indoors sleep.  He is older, after all.  Like 14 years old.  On occasion he may play with a toy or bat a bathrobe belt, but he's happy just laying around on furniture or laps.  He's a lap cat,  Minnie is not.

But Minnie has that sweet, can do no wrong look. Even I succumb to it.  Mom is putty in Minnie's paws, dad not so much.

Here's an example.  Minnie is not supposed to be on the kitchen island.  The stovetop is there, and she could get burnt.  But when Mom sees her up there, she says, "Minnie, you know you're not allowed on the island."  Minnie will put on her cute face and rub against mom's arm or face.  And she stays where she is.  If mom doesn't help Minnie scoot off the island, Dad comes out and pushes her down.

In all fairness, though, I have to admit that Minnie, the grey and peach Hemmingway, is adorable.  She'll come up to me and sniff at me, then walk away.  If that isn't an invitation to play, I don't know what is.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:  "The middle of the road is for yellow lines and armadillos."     Jim Hightower

THIS IS:  It's National Dog Days and National grilling, hot dog and ice cream month

A few nights ago, mom dad and me went for a walk.  When we got near this one house,   we usually see one or two cats who run away when they see me. I don't know why.  They have a dog as a sibling.

Then, one night something strange happened.  The cats morphed into an entirely different species.  They were about the same size, but they had shorter legs and no fur.  I scared one away, who was rather slow, but the other one kept creeping closer to me and my family.    Mom tried to use her cane to force it into a different direction, but it just coming at us.  There was nothing to be afraid of, because I was there to protect my family.

Upon closer inspection,  I noticed that the animal was dark and had a hard shell.  Mom said, Look, it's an armadillo."

A what? I tried to get close to it to see if it wanted to play, but dad pulled me away. I fought a bit, but in the end, I gave in to dad.  With such a hard shell, I didn't think I could hurt it.  But dad was afraid it would hurt me.  How sweet.  Dad loves me.

I still would have liked play with it. Well, you win some you lose some.  That's the life of a dog.

EVERYTHING CHANGES EVENTUALLY

QUOTE OF THE DAY:  "If animals could speak, the dog would be a blundering outspoken fellow; but the cat would have the rare grace of never saying a word too much."  Mark Twain

THIS IS:  National Smile Month

Everything changes eventually.  I remember the fun I had at the small dog run every morning. Jesse,  Beauty, Buster and me would meet about 7:30.  It was fun. The moms would bring treats and we'd have a snack before breakfast.    We played chase and got some exercise.

My day got even better when mom took me for my daily walk.

In the evening, after supper, mom would take me to the big dog run where we'd meet Jesse. We would play chase again, .and then chased the squirrels up trees.  We came close,. but we  never caught one.

Then one morning, Jesse never came.   His mom and he went back went home.  Beauty must have changed her schedule, and Buster, who was the oldest, passed away.

Moms still took me for walks until one day she went out with dad and he didn't bring her home. After several weeks, he took me to see her. It was the big building with lots and lots of bedrooms. Dad called it a nursing home/rehab center.  As we walked the halls, people called out to him.  They wanted to pet me.  That was fun.  But when I got to mom's room, I jumped on the bed and gave her a ton of kisses.  I didn't leave her side. I  snuggled with her on the bed. Mom, dad  and to me went for a walk outside later. Dad pushed mom in this chair that had wheels.  She couldn't walk.  Oh my, another change.

Mom still can't walk well enough to take me for a walk on a leash, but dad takes mom and me for a walk around the block.  It's nice but very slow.  We still go to the big dog run, and I occasionally see other dogs there, and I can play with a few of them.   Some dogs don't like other dogs and other dogs are loners.  I love other dogs and look forward to playing with them.

But I really miss Jesse, and I hate it when things change.

MOM GOT A TAT

THIS IS:  National Stroke Awareness Month

QUOTE OF THE DAY:  "Never a failure, always a lesson"
                                                                                    Unknown

Mom Got a tat.  What is that, you make  ask?   Well, to those of us in the know, it's a tattoo.    Yeah, well into her senior years, and she does something a teenager would do.   It's been said, that as people get older their age actually reverts to that of a child or in general, younger years.

Mom claims there is a very good reason she got her tat. No, not to be cool, but to mark a spot on her knee where a medical device must be placed.

Since her stroke, mom has had a little trouble learning to walk again,  The device is called a Walk Aid, and it helps keep her foot from rolling sideways.   The electrical pulses zap the nerves  that go to the foot promoting better walk ability.

Anyway,  her tat is really cute.   Since she and dad are avid theme park fans, mom picked a head shot of Minnie Mouse for her tat and, it's in color.  It is really cute, but a mouse?  How about a dog like me, or a puppy paw.  I've seen dog tats on television on that show  Pit bulls and Parolees.  It seems they all sports a tat  of a pit bull.  Pit bulls are strong and fun to play with, but mom should have put me on her knee.

Maybe the next one.   I've heard her say that once you get your first tattoo, you'll want another one and she does.   She tried talking dad into getting one or at least getting a pierced ear, but he'll have none of that stuff.

I'm with mom on this one.  Some body art is trashy looking, but a meaningful piece of artwork in the right location is  good.   Just take a look at mom's right.

FRIENDSHIP

QUOTE OF THE DAY:  "True friendship is like sound health, the value of it seldom known until it be lost. "     Charles Caleb Cotton

THIS IS:  Frog Month and National Pet Month

It was an interesting weekend here at the Cove.  Dad went to Dallas for a bridge tournament.   Mom had a friend stay with her for the weekend.  her friend came Thursday, night.   Denise and mom  have been friends for about forty years.  (Sure makes them sound old, doesn't it?)  They have not seen each other for 25 years.   They reconnected and had a ball.

Denise helped mom out, and she took me for a daily walk.  I loved it.  She gave me treats and lots of attention.  I could tell how much they miss each other a lot.  They hugged each other a bunch.

The phrase I heard  most was "Do you remember...?"
Then one of them would tell a story, and  they would laugh. There was a lot laughter.   One day they went out and came home  with all these bags.   But nothing was for me.  I guess there wasn't a pet store at the outlet mall.

Mom and Denise left the house Monday morning but mom came home with dad.  Denise must have went back home to her family.  I was so happy to see him, I missed him lots.

Dad was all happy and puffed out  at the chest.    He and his bridge  partner came in first in their division at the National Conference.  I am proud of my dad and happy for mom that she got to see her best friend.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:  "Always remember to forget friends that proved untrue.  But never forgot to remember those that have stuck by you."
                                                  Irish Proverb

THIS IS:    Of the course, it's St. Patrick's Day, but it's also  National   Craft,  Kidney, and  Nutrition  Month

Mom and dad went on a seven day cruise and put me in the kennel again.  The cats get to stay home and have someone come in and take care of them.  Oh well, I love the kennel because I get play dates with the other dogs staying there.

I hate to brag, but I am the life of the party. I have so much fun playing chase and meeting new friends.   Sometimes it's a new group every day.  Other time a few of the same dogs are there. I love making new friends.

The thing I miss most about being home is that I miss mom dad.  The next thing is sleeping in the big bed with mom and dad.  It's so warm and comfortable on the mattress with the nice comforter to lay on.

The nights seems so long in the kennel, and no one makes popcorn.   Dad makes it several times a week after mom has gone to bed. I listen for the familiar sounds of the pan and the popping.   When it's done, I jump off the bed and join dad in the living room for a late night snack.  I love popcorn.   Dad sometimes throws me a kernel and I catch it.  I think it's a game. I play well because I like the  reward.

I get treats at the kennel, too.   But not popcorn.  They are usually boring regular dog treats. I like them of course, but sharing a bowl of popcorn with dad is so much better.  We had popcorn last night, and mom missed it did because she was sleeping.

I am really glad they're home.
